What it does

A picture of your disk that answers the question you opened it with.

Which folder got big, and what is inside it. Everything here exists to shorten the distance between those two things.

One ring, three levels deep

The chart shows the folder you are in and two levels beneath it at the same time. A wedge's size is its share of the space, so whatever filled the disk is the first thing you look at.

Click straight through it

Clicking a wedge opens its details: the full path, and what is inside it sorted largest first. Click a folder in that list and the ring goes there.

System Data, itemised

macOS reports one opaque number and leaves you to guess. Sunflower splits it into caches, backups, derived data and the rest, and says what each one is before you touch it.

Apps and what they left behind

Every installed app is sized by its bundle plus the support folders, containers and caches it scattered around the disk. Uninstalling takes all of it.

Rings, treemap or a plain list

Rings are for browsing. A treemap compares many uneven folders by area, and a sorted list never folds anything away for being small. The choice lives in Settings.

Every disk you have mounted

External drives appear next to the startup disk, each with how full it is, and you pick the one that is actually filling up.

How it works

Scan once, then follow the space.

Start with the whole disk

The ring fills with what you actually have, and a thin arc outside it shows how full the disk is. Free space used to take up most of the circle and buried the folders anyone came to look at, so it moved out to the edge where one number belongs.

Open the one that grew

Selecting a folder slides the ring so that folder sits in the middle of what you can see, and the panel names it, sizes it and lists what is inside. Clicking a folder in that list goes there.

4,849 files live only in iCloud. They take no space here, and Sunflower left them there rather than downloading them to weigh them.
928.5 MB here is the same data as another file on disk, so Sunflower counts it once.

Deal with what you found

An app can go along with everything it left scattered around the disk. Or clear just its caches and keep the app, which is what you usually want from something you are still using.

Clear 11,3 GB of caches and leave Xcode installed. It rebuilds what it needs the next time you open it.

What it will not do

A disk analyser has to be trusted with the whole disk.

These are not settings. They are how the app is built, and none of them can be turned off.

Nothing is read until you ask

Opening Sunflower reads a disk name and a capacity, and stops there. The walk begins when you press the button, and you can stop it partway and keep what it found.

Nothing goes without being named

Every removal passes through one sheet that lists exactly what is going and what it frees. Items go to the Trash, so a change of mind costs nothing.

macOS is off limits

Sunflower will not delete system paths. You can look at every byte of them, and there is no setting that changes what it will do with them.

iCloud files stay in iCloud

A file that lives only in the cloud takes no space on your Mac. Sunflower counts it as zero and leaves it there rather than downloading it to weigh it.
